Fewer, Better, Longer-Lasting: The Durable Merch Mindset

More merchandise does not automatically create more value. A smaller collection of well-made products can often make a stronger impression than a large assortment of inexpensive giveaways.

PPAI’s Product Power 2026 research, based on more than 5,000 U.S. respondents, found that consumers increasingly want better-designed, more meaningful merchandise rather than simply more products. The same research identified low durability as the leading reason a promotional item feels cheap or forgettable, cited by 62% of respondents.

For apparel, that may mean choosing a substantial heavyweight hoodie or well-constructed fleece jacket instead of the least expensive T-shirt available. Fabric weight is one useful specification, but it is not the only indicator of quality. Fiber content, stitching, fit, softness, colorfastness, zipper quality, and overall construction also matter.

Durability can be particularly important in employee recognition and gifting programs. Gallup and Workhuman found that employees who received high-quality recognition were 45% less likely to have left their organization two years later. Merchandise alone does not create retention, but a relevant, thoughtfully selected gift can support a broader recognition strategy.

At Merch Haus by k101, we help clients balance quantity, quality, budget, and intended use. The goal is not simply to distribute something with a logo. It is to create merchandise that continues representing the brand every time it is worn, carried, or used.
